Felt has long been central to life in Mongolia—used for clothing, the Mongolian ger, and everyday household items. This one-day experience in Ulaanbaatar focuses on felt not as a souvenir, but as a living, working skill, shared in an informal, welcoming setting where learning happens through doing. The organisations you visit are long-term partners that Eternal Landscapes Mongolia has supported over many years as part of its wider commitment to community-led initiatives.
The day begins in the ger districts of the capital with a visit to Asral NGO, a Buddhist organisation running a range of social outreach projects. One of these is Made in Mongolia, a programme supporting disadvantaged women through training in traditional felt making. You’ll visit their centre and meet the women involved, hearing how craft, community, and income generation come together in practice. You may also find yourself surrounded by more Mongolian felt slippers than you thought possible.
From here, it’s a short drive to Tsagaan Alt (White Gold), a women-led cooperative that EL has worked alongside for several years. This is where the day becomes fully hands-on. During a relaxed four-hour workshop, you’ll be guided step by step through the traditional felt-making process, learning about materials, preparation, and technique.
The atmosphere is informal and sociable, with plenty of conversation and shared effort. The focus is firmly on participation and understanding rather than perfection—no prior experience is needed, and curiosity matters far more than neat results.
By the end of the day, you’ll have a practical understanding of a craft that has shaped Mongolian life for generations, alongside a deeper appreciation of how women today are using these skills to support themselves and their communities. It’s an engaging, enjoyable way to spend a day in Ulaanbaatar.
